Torricelli Voices Sorrow for the Country and the Constitution

Washington, D.C. -- In announcing that he would vote against the articles of impeachment, Sen. Robert G. Torricelli (D-NJ) issued the following public statement today:

"It is impossible for anyone who has lived through this time in our history not to feel sadness for the shadow cast on our country both at home and abroad. President Clinton's behavior is inexcusable and he has dishonored his office.

"Yet the manner in which this case was brought before us was an equal disgrace. We had to endure a flawed prosecutor's unending pursuit of a duly-elected President. We had to watch as the House managers presented a case that did not withstand the scrutiny of fact or law.

"I believe the Senate will rise above the partisan rancor that has characterized this case. Tomorrow's vote against impeachment is a vote not for the President, but for the Constitution."
