The Secretary of State has announced the results of the write-in primary campaigns of Orville Weyrich (L) and Stuart Turnansky (D) for District 8 State Senate.
The Committee to Elect Orville Weyrich is pleased to announce that Dr. Weyrich received 50% more votes than necessary to move into the general election.
Since Dr. Turnansky received fewer than half the required number of votes to move into the general election, the general election will be a two-way race between Orville Weyrich (L) and Carolyn Allen (R).
Dr. Weyrich said that he looks forward to serving the people of Arizona in the state senate, and promised to consult with stakeholders on all sides of the issues facing the legislature. He stated "Open and honest communication will be a hallmark of my tenure as State Senator. While it is impossible to please everyone, at least people will know that I have listened."
Dr. Weyrich also pledged to energetically represent the people of District 8 in the State Senate. He noted that whereas the outgoing Senator Randall Gnant has one of the best voting attendance records in the legislature, as a member of the State House, Representative Allen failed to vote [due to illness] on 324 of the 785 bills sent to the governor in 2001-2002.
When asked how he would vote on the issues, Dr. Weyrich replied that his record would look more like Representative Wes Marsh (R) than Representative Allen, noting the leading role that Representative Marsh played in lowering taxes.
Senator Gnant and Representatives Allen and Marsh are presently serving the old District 28, which constitutes much of the new District 8, due to redistricting after the 2000 census.
