The Committee to Elect Orville Weyrich is pleased to announce receiving the endorsement of Sheriff Richard Mack (D-Graham County, retired) for Dr. Weyrich's candidacy for the Arizona State Senate in Legislative District 8.
According to Sheriff Mack, "I am most proud and honored to support Dr. Orville Weyrich, Jr. for the State Senate District 8 race. His belief in America and fundamental principles is refreshing and admirable. Dr. Weyrich is not a politician; he's a statesman. What's more, he knows the difference."
Sheriff Mack, a Democrat, joins retired Councilwoman Frances Barwood, a Republican, in endorsing Dr. Weyrich. As Weyrich's opponent, Carolyn Allen, pointed out, "Achieving consensus and consensus building is necessary if you are going to get things done. You need to learn to get along with people on both sides of the aisle" [The Fountain Hills Times, August 28, 2002 page 7A]. Dr. Weyrich agrees, and says that he is actively pursuing input from the public as well as current and future lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. He is seeking to forge a legislative agenda that he will be able to launch upon taking office.
Secretary of State Betsey Bayless certified Weyrich to appear on the General Election ballot on September 23. He will face Republican Carolyn Allen in a two-way race. At this time there are no write-in candidates for this office.
Sheriff Mack is best known for the scrupulous attention to the Bill of Rights that characterized his tenure in office as Sheriff of Graham County and his defense of the Tenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Sheriff Mack successfully brought a case to the Supreme Court that overturned an unfunded Federal mandate placed on his office as part of the Brady bill.
